Summary:
Hardly what one could even call a nation, The Free Cities of Io are more like a loosely aligned federation of city-states scattered throughout the surface and underground on Io. Brought together through the Insurrection War by the actions of the legendary pilot Caladrius. The Surface is more or less a wild-west, with little in the means of laws to protect people outside the major city centers. This has made Io a ripe place for Vultures to take residence or otherwise shady trade deals to take place. The Free Cities lack a standing military of any sort and instead rely on the small militia groups that have taken residence in the various city centers.
Io suffered the worst of the war, where it was the Praetorians were mostly found. Those who survive the initial attacks made it underground to safety, rarely stepping outside for risk of sudden death. Io also suffered the great atrocity of the Day of Raining Hellfire at the hands of the Jovian Alliance.
If there's anything to Io that would make it worth, is its rich stockpiles of metals and resources, prime for the production of mobile suits and other weapons of war. Such resource reserves have made the planet prime real estate for factories and forges who wish to take advantage of the land.
