Around those who have already seen through his disguise, Van loosens up considerably, though even in other circumstances he occasionally tips his hand and his scholarly knowledge comes pouring out.
Compared to his teammates, Van is a considerable backbone for the experimental squad. His analytical nature and well read base of knowledge provide much insight to the N.U.N.S.' engineers and mechanics.

History: The Ganom was joint developed by Macross fleets with high populations of Zentraedi as the Spacy forces largely opted to field the more modern Meltran designed battle suits while scores of Nousjadols collected dust. Taking the old, generalist design, the Spacy salvaged the many battle suits and remodeled them to be more distinguished in its role while also layering on a more assault focused design angle. The resulting battle suit boasts a twin thermonuclear converter to power its booster pack with greatly heightened thrust to keep up with the meltran suits, though the Ganom still notably comes up short on maneuverability. This shortcoming is largely due to the newly added mass from the full body Energy Conversion Armor, offering points of defense over even new Queadluun Rheas.
The fixed armaments were left largely untouched, simply tuned for the Ganom's assault oriented roles. However, the same can't be said for the old hand weapons; most fleets haven't been able to develop a satisfactory replacement for the standard issue laser pistol, landing the Ganom to either do without or sortie with a spare gunpod from a Variable Fighter.
In the end, the Ganom is a distinct step up from its previous form, though its unique adoption finds it as a scarce novelty despite its performance.

The Macross Vermillion is an assault oriented colonization vessel designed to work in tandem with its sister ship, the more passive Macross Azure. Featuring increased fixed weaponry, the unique feature of a more robust, old style converging Macross cannon, as well as an incorporated Total Barrier overload system, and s protective armor coating that protects the vessel from intense waves, radiation, and other cosmic phenomena (and gives the vessel its distinctive red color scheme), the Macross Vermillion is equipped to tackle even the deepest and most hazardous reaches of the universe.
The distinct, L shaped arms of the Vermillion's converging Macross cannon extends from behind the vessel's shoulders in attack mode mounted on universal joints. Making use of this additional space, the Vermillion sports a second pair of flight decks along the arms and mounts its primary converging beam cannons on retractable mounts along the underside of the arms. This not only allows for an impressive range of firing solutions, even for the Macross cannon itself, but also gives the vessel a striking, avian profile, especially in attack mode.
With its cutting edge technology and Zentraedi inspired curves and angles, it's no wonder the Vermillion's crew, as well as Vermillion City's population, is primarily Zentran; even the number of Zentraedi battle pods and suits is notably high for a Macross fleet.
However, due in part to the fleet's relatively isolated the Vermillion's tech was really only cutting edge upon its departure; its advanced Variable Fighters became obsolete by the time the combined Azure and Vermillion fleet settled a system and the Vermillion turned back for the return trip to Earth. It took some time just to reconnect with another fleet and receive fold transmissions for the data on the YF-24, meanwhile they had since been upgrading the squadrons with "new" VF-19s. Until a concept comes forward from the Vermillion's research team on a production unit from the 24, the fleet makes do with stopgap upgrades to its aged units courtesy of its skilled technicians and engineers.
