Biography: Born the ninth daughter to her family clan, Carina had few prospects and fewer hopes growing up. She was small, she was restless, and she was so far down the pecking order that the best she could hope for was an inauspicious marriage to an obscure merchant, domestic servitude as a chambermaid's chambermaid for some underage princeling, a life of abject poverty as a dancer or prostitute, or menial labor as nameless, faceless cannon fodder in the Chizetan army.

Such was the abundance of far prettier, far wittier, far more prestigious women around her and within her own family that her own middling plainness rendered her little more than chattel. She was intelligent enough to complete a directed task, which at least made her more useful than outright livestock, but only barely. Her predilection for athletics and nature certainly didn't help that - somehow, even in a kingdom where women of action and power did all jobs and fought all battles, she still managed to stick out as a tomboy.

Yet in time, she found her situation granted at least a minor measure of freedom. She was so little regarded that it was shrugged off if she disappeared for lengths of time, or came home dirty from days in the woods. She took odd jobs most others were too proud for, working fields and hunting monsters, chasing down stray animals. Within her village, she eventually became known as something of the local trained monkey, floating from shop to shop taking on the worst, hardest, and most physical jobs.

While it was probably little better than she'd have gotten elsewhere, she at least had a say in where she slept and what she did. She could travel and explore, largely free of expectations or obligations.

It was on one of these adventurous excursions that the strange things started happening. A peculiar dream one night of an alabaster woman from a different world. An unbidden vision the next day of a flaming wolf who questioned why she saw what others could not. And then the moment a tall, rough-hewn lady knight appeared before her, addressing her as 'Magic Knight'...

Weaknesses: Like all flames, she can be hard to stop unless her passion exceeds her fuel. Deprived of oxygen, a flame shrinks until it is easily extinguished. Carina is so forthright and forceful that she easily overextends and overexerts, working herself to the bone to hold the line when she should be retreating.

Appearance: Though outwardly a pampered, soft-spoken, affluent beauty, Mirai is something of an underhanded trickster with a broad streak for mischief. Her years carefully and tenaciously clawing her way through the dense hierarchy of the Imperial Court have left her with a refined poise and well-honed aura of mystery, to say nothing of the immaculate raven hair that frames her bright purple eyes. Or her lavish wardrobe of gowns and collection of weaponry.

Biography: Mirai's mother was a court mage and highly-ranked consort of the Emperor. Her father, on the other hand, was a much lower ranking retainer in her mother's service, and their love affair a closely guarded secret. Just how successful they were at keeping their trist and resulting child hidden is a fine question - despite concealing the circumstances of her birth and relegating her to being her father's lowborn niece, her mother was tasked with ever more precarious assignments in the years after Mirai's birth. These assignments routinely kept her away from the Court and in the line of fire, until, at the age of 8, Mirai found herself an orphan.

She never forgave the ruling class of Fahren for this, cultivating a grudge against society that, by her teens, set her on a path to mete out justice. She learned how to manipulate people, how to play the game of social climbing, how to handle a weapon and defend herself. Styling herself as a mere courtesan, she flew under many radars as she worked her way up, gathering information on her parents' fate and quietly undoing those deserving along the way.

Yet the closer to the heart of the spider's web she climbed, the stickier it got and the more entangled she became. Her progress slowed as the process became more fraught, and her approach more methodical. She routinely had to bide her time and wait for opportunity to reveal itself, playing her role to the best of her ability in the meantime. The closer she got to the imperial court, the more eyes were keenly upon her, and the more cautious she had to be.

Her quest ultimately came to a crashing halt the day the visions began. A peculiar dream one night of an alabaster woman from a different world. The unbidden image of a talking cat who questioned the righteousness of her mission. The intercession of a mysterious robed and masked figure. And the appearance of a man before her - a master mage, who addressed her as 'Magic Knight'...

Strengths: Mirai's frosty, methodical manner amid conflict makes her a natural tactician and highly effective support caster in a team setting. Her penchant is for traps, remote weaponry, poisons, and other roundabout means that keep her removed from her target. While she's hardly above a good old-fashioned plunging of the knife, her preference is to watch from a distance, committing every detail of an opponent's demise to memory, and keeping her hands unsullied.
Weaknesses: Her detachment from her attacks and preference for underhanded, highly lethal measures make her little more than a cold-blooded murderer. She takes no particular joy in (and holds no admiration for) the martial arts, much less any chivalric codes that try to find meaning or purpose in combat. She views such conflicts as an unfortunate last resort, and her opposition in such a situation as merely an object to be erased as quickly and quietly as possible. This leaves her a somewhat reticent fighter, weaker at melee than ranged fighting, and quicker to unnecessary slaughter.
