History:
The roots of the Beastman Nation stretch far into humanity's past - back to before man departed the ruined Earth for the new, prosperous frontier of Mars. Forseeing the need to either adapt or abandon their home for the stars, a few intrepid and genius minds set about seeking a different solution. They succeeded in cross-breeding stock humans with animal DNA through gene-splicing, resulting in the first hybrids. Their experiments were in fact a resouding success: these so-called 'beast men' were far stronger, faster, and tougher than their progenitors. Better yet, they exhibited genetic compatibility with pure humans, ensuring that the race of man would continue apace. A new people, one hardy enough to withstand the continually worsening conditions on the third planet from the sun.

Unfortunately, public opinion rapidly turned against science once the initial fascination wore thin. Few were willing to allow their offspring to be 'tampered with' in the womb as was necessary to birth the first meaningful population of beastmen. While those willing still numbered in the millions, they represented only a small fraction of the human population as a whole. Relations between human and hybrid were soured to the point that when mankind fled to the stars, its genetically-altered progeny were left behind en masse to fend for themselves.

Living in isolated underground communities after the great exodus, the beastmen nonetheless formed the grassroots of a unified government that would become the Beastman Nation. They flourished despite their environment, growing rather than decreasing in number against all odds. A few individuals even began to experience a unique adaptation borne of the harsh conditions, the supernatural ability to generate a force known as 'Spiral Energy' that seemingly surpassed the limits of known science to perform miraculous feats.

By the time humanity descended upon the Earth once more, the Beastman Nation had become an entity in earnest ruled by a benevolent monarch known as the 'Spiral King'. Having experienced the restoration of the planet first-hand and formed bonds with the various magical cultures that emerged into their reality in the three-hundred-year gap, they were understandably resentful and leery of their erstwhile creators. Yet a consensus was reached peacefully: in lieu of not opposing man's return, their territory was to remain likewise unmolested by invasion or war.

Currently, the Beastmen Nation at large is occupied simply with maintaining its territory and livelyhood against threats such as the BETA, generally cooperating with other nations when and if necessary.

Look and Feel:
The most notable and well-known aspect of the Beastmen Nation is its inhabitants fiercely territorial nature. While begrudgingly willing to play the part of friendly neighbors with the other governments that border it, individual beastmen tend to resent any incursion onto their land, with the greatest exceptions being made for trade and the like that provide a direct benefit. Don't expect to be attacked on sight for visiting, but don't expect the warmest welcome either.

Despite being officially established as a monarchy under the Spiral King (or Queen), beyond Teppelin City and a few other major urban centers the majority of the population still live in self-contained, self-regulated underground communities scattered across northern Africa. The divide between 'urban' and 'country' beastmen is roughly 30-70, respectively.

As a holdover from their survivalist nature and animalistic heritage, beastmen may appear primitive and rough-hewn by the standards of other nations with their handmade garments, tools, and so forth rather than mass-produced items. Their mobile weapon forces too reflect this philosophy of self-dependance, though advances have been made in recent years to provide a more consistent defensive force, making Grapearls an increasingly common sight.

The majority of mecha in use by inhabitants of the Beastmen Nation are Gunmen - roughshod, ramshackle machines primarily constructed of the cobbled-together remnants and cast-off parts of other units. In following with their animal heritage, many are fashioned with beastial features, and strangely enough almost all resemble disembodied heads with arms and legs. While individual Gunmen may be fairly unimpressive in terms of performance and lightly armed, their handmade nature also ensures that dozens of such machines lurk around every corner in beastman territory, and their pilots are relentless in the face of even the worst odds.

Grapearl:

The first truly mass-produced beastman unit, the Grapearl is derived from several iterations of prototype units and carefully constructed in the capital city of Teppelin. Taking cues from outside sources, the Grapearl is streamlined, conventionally humanoid, and features remarkably high performance for a first-generation machine. While production of Grapearls is still ramping up to full capacity, they tend to be crewed by the most skilled pilots the Nation has to offer.
