"The League?"

Two voices, not simultaneously but close to it called out. Equal part surprise and frustration one weighing more from one than the other. But both with ample contemplation hiding behind the veneer of a response.

"Yes Grandmother." A woman spoke to another, the Grandmother's visage seeming no day older than the one who called her such. Her red eyes scouring the distance for an answer. "It appears the remnants have returned from their self imposed exile at last." A gaze fell upon the speaker, silence following.

A hand tapped on a wooden chair, she remembered the days before all they had for a good while was rubble and dust, before the literal earth shattering turn of events that came with humanity's struggles, and their own. Thinking back to those times she sunk in her chair and sighed.
"I suppose I should congratulate them on surviving while only slightly eating each other like rabid hounds. That is much better than I expected but no it seems to not totally have turned into anarchism up there, even if the leaders of yore seem to have been cannibalised by corporations." A half hearted gesture at best as the woman raised her glass.

"I can't help but be glad in spite of myself. But this will set events into motion causing our duties to double, we have a deadline to meet ladies."

The rhythmic pump of machinery continued in the background as a man steadied his tie. It had been quite some time since everything had occurred but it was still clear as day. Even if the day itself wasn't.

Especially because the day itself wasn't.

They had never been under so much threat, they had chosen this location for a reason. The utter lack of seismic threats being premier among them but still that day was the scariest day he had endured. When the earths melting crusts even momentarily pierced their defenses. The lone time when his red eyes saw the Black Workshop under threat.
"So the combined government cracked and was replaced by a league of companies. What about Murakumo?"

"Not among the returning companies, it seems they became another entity before collapsing entirely."

"Like Chrome?"

"Less heroically."

Less heroic then Chrome, it almost made the man laugh. Chrome who wielded their "Justice" like a hammer.

"I wonder if they'll remember us." He mused, watching out of a window as engines pumped in a distant cavern wall. "It won't matter, unless they unanimously decide to block our collaboration one will desire to reap the benefits. And even if they agree its not like companies are the moral platform they can claim to be. A public cry against us and an under the table deal are to be expected. But they will provide the fertile soil for our tests."

"Arrange a meeting, I would speak personally with a representative."

Two pairs of eyes watched entirely distant sceneries. One reminiscent of the Controller's hidey-holes underneath all of creation and another more evocative of the present and the past above ground. Yet both pairs gazed truly not into the present, but had their sight aimed at the future.

Centered in their gaze, a black mist. The one before had covered the world in the smoke of gunpowder and rockets departing for another place.
This one sought to embrace the land and never. let. go.
