INTRODUCTION:

They are known by many names - "Killbots", "War Locusts", "Toasters" - but the entities designated formally as the Praetorians have threatened mankind for over a century, bringing it to the brink of extinction. None are spared from their all-encompassing wrath, and none avoid encountering them for long in life - as even in defeat, they remain a constant threat. This guide is to serve as an introduction to what, exactly, the Praetorians are, how they operate, their objectives, current situation, and how to fight them. It has been compiled over the course of decades, pieced together by warriors both new and old, to give you a fighting chance.

Defending your territory, your home, your friends and family - will require you to be able to analyze, engage, and dispatch the machines at a moment's notice. Hunter or Vulture, all must be prepared to unite in the event of a full-scale incursion - for in such a case, we must all stand together...

Or we shall surely hang together.

I - OVERVIEW
The Praetorians are an entirely mechanical force comprised of solely automated, AI-controlled mobile weapons, vehicles, ships, and factories. Typically, they are encountered as Mobile Suits, but are more commonly associated with the hulking Mobile Armors, a form which they have never truly shed since their inception. Their goal is remarkably simple: Extermination of all human life, and at is in this endeavor that they excel, bending all of their considerable resources toward its realization.

They can be found in any locale - though the largest and most dangerous of their kind were contained in the Eye of Jupiter, many sleeper cells remain, left behind, lying in wait. Some are simply buried under the earth, whether by accident or design, and are occasionally uncovered by civilians, causing them to jolt back to life, ready to fulfill their purpose. Others travel below the waves of Europa, crawling at depths otherwise unreachable for any living thing, watching the lights overhead for any sight of human activity, ready to drag them down into the black abyss. Nowhere is safe, and citizens of the Jovian Sphere should always be on guard, even in low-security sectors, as danger can be just underfoot at any moment.

What makes the Praetorians so feared is their ability to proliferate rapidly. A single insurgent unit can quickly take over a factory or installation, and turn what once was producing peaceful appliances into an engine of staggering efficiency, able to crank out countless war weapons in record time. They accomplish this through the use of Colloid Virus Injectors, which are used to reprogram factory systems to serve their own needs. While most modern facilities are prepared with this in mind, there exist countless such plants which were built during, or prior to the Insurrection War.

A Praetorian that is able to locate and seize such a locale becomes an existential threat, able to grow and multiply its force in a staggeringly short time - thus, Vultures and MS Hunters alike are to hunt down and destroy such machines on sight. The catacombs below Io are still, to this day, plagued with Praetorian Plumas because they maintain a stranglehold on deep-plate volcanic forges, providing them with almost limitless materials. This is also why salvage is of considerable interest - retrieving technology first, and placing it in human hands is vastly preferable to allowing the machines to take it for themselves.

Some Mobile Armors are able to generate what are called Pluma, small scale mobile weapons that can reap resources from locales, overwhelm targets, repair the mother unit and quickly multiply. These were a late development in the Insurrection War, and indicated a turning point in the Praetorian's strategy - no longer were they dependent on factories and bases for reinforcements, they could simply build the capacity to manufacture additional forces into themselves. It is to be assumed that any large scale mobile weapon of Praetorian origin is capable of producing Pluma.

II - PRAETORIAN CONSTRUCTS

The most notable part of this guide for any Hunter or Vulture is properly identifying and understanding the capabilities of a Praetorian machine. For starters, there is a wide degree of diversity in ability among their ranks, owing to the long stretch of time over which they were manufactured. The average enemy can range from simple, commandeered drones, to augmented mobile suits, lumbering mobile armors, to wholly independent, highly intelligent Hunter-Killer machines.

Early on in the Insurrection War, the most frequently encountered forms of Praetorians were repurposed Mobile Workers, which had their cockpits replaced with AI blocks. In the aftermath of the initial nuclear assaults from the Mobile Armors, these machines stalked the streets, gunning down survivors in silver phalanxes, but they fared poorly against Mobile Suits. Later, the Praetorians began commandeering Mobile Suits as well, once again making use of specially constructed AI control blocks to take over any they happened across - these remain the most commonly encountered of their kind.

They are far from mindless killers, despite frequent rumor to the contrary - Praetorian machines work as a hive-mind, transmitting, analyzing, and sharing data between one another in an incredibly vast network which we have only barely began to understand. Capturing and studying them is an extremely difficult task, as they will sooner engage self-destruct mechanisms than allow themselves to be taken intact, completely melting down their core systems so as to render them useless to later examination. Their artificial intelligence modules are, on average, adaptive combatants easily capable of going toe-to-toe with the average human pilot, taking advantage of their numbers to coordinate interlocking volleys of fire to pin down and destroy whatever opposes them.

During the later stages of the war, the enemy began to innovate. Custom variations of Mobile Suits and new designs crafted specifically for their use emerged, no longer simply mimicking our own weapons, but constructed for the wholesale slaughter of civilians, such as the infamous "Bug" and "Automaton" units. These "Late Type" Praetorian units were easily distinguishable by their off-white and red coloration, as well as their unusual texture - an effect of nanomachine coatings applied to the surface of their hulls, allowing them to endure enormous damage, as well as restore their functionality over time. Thankfully, these machines were mostly destroyed during the final battles, and have rarely resurfaced since, for reasons unknown.
