Byston Well.

A land that has existed since time immemorial, once the subject of many fantastic myths and legends - yet now, a shadow of its former glory.

Once a realm of unparalleled beauty, renowned for its close proximity to the Lifestream, Byston Well once teemed with life, vitality, and brightness.

To live within its borders, it was said, would cure all manner of illness, inspire boundless creativity, and heal even the most broken hearts. It was a place where the souls of the dead, according to legend, rested, awaiting their rebirth in the world above - a heaven on Earth.

Those seeking to meet their loved ones would visit to receive their council or blessing, to briefly awaken them from their slumber so that they might speak once more.

Until one day, a great and terrible fog began to creep across the land… and the spirits of the dead all at once fell silent.

Fear and anxiety gripped the nation. The nights grew longer, the days shorter. Paths once wide and welcoming became dark, close, and dangerous, walled on all sides by creeping, grasping trees that hid terrors in their shades.

Creeping forests began to stretch over the land like enormous claws, as though feeding on the noxious fog.

Great heroes came from every corner of the realm, each swearing to return the beautiful country to what it once was: Belin Dana, the Earthshaker. Ceritha Flintvale and the all-seeing raven, Harbeak. Mohro Rodz, the Deepwalker. Long was the list of names, and many the trek made…

Yet none who ever ventured into the mists ever returned.

With time, the visitors slowed to a trickle… and stopped.

What had once been a place of pilgrimage became a dumping ground for exiles, criminals, outlaws and desperados fleeing the long arm of the law.

Eventually, even this practice was eventually abolished. The “Aura Road” that had once connected Byston Well to Cephiro and other outlying worlds was slammed shut, deemed too great a danger to be allowed to remain open any longer.

Byston Well was slowly but surely forgotten.

A condemned world doomed to a death of slow strangulation. A land of eternal night, choking mist, and ever-present danger.

For over two thousand years, it has remained as such.

Yet life has found a way.

Although less than half a million residents of Byston Well remain, they have developed their own ways of surviving - even thriving.

And they have not forgotten those on the outside…
